The heraldic record is clear: the unicorn is decorative, the hippogriff is derivative, and the griffin is the original firm both were founded to compete with. Note the scale relationship — the griffin has allowed the smaller creatures into the frame, which heralds agree is the most menacing thing a griffin can do.
