Ching Shih commanded tens of thousands of pirates and a fleet the Qing navy, the East India Company, and the Portuguese Empire each failed to defeat. She then negotiated her own amnesty, kept the money, and retired peacefully — the only pirate career in history with a satisfying final chapter. The problems, it turns out, were everyone else's.
