“What About the Children”
- Era
- 1720, sentencing phase
- Provenance
- A Jamaican courtroom, briefly speechless
- Medium
- Silhouette print on cream, cutlass and flintlock in profile
- Edition
- Two granted, gallows left holding the rope
Two pirates stood before a court that had already measured the rope, and each produced the eighteenth century's only reliable legal defense. The noose between them is depicted unemployed. The court's records do not preserve the judge's expression, which historians consider a loss.
Upper text block is cropped at the top margin of the print; letterforms partially lost at the trim line. Under evaluation for reprint.
